On programming courses, the coursework consists of programming assignments that need to be assessed from different points of view. Since the submitted assignments are executable programs with a formal structure, some features can be assessed automatically. The basic requirement for automated assessment is the numerical measurability of assessment targets, but semiautomatic approaches can overcome this restriction. Recognizing automatically assessable features can help teachers to create educational models, where automatic tools let teachers concentrate their work on the learning issues that need student-teacher interaction the most. Several automatic tools for both static and dynamic assessment of computer programs have been reported in the literature. This article promotes these issues by surveying several automatic approaches for assessing programming assignments. Not all the existing tools will be covered, simply because of the vast number of them. The article concentrates on bringing forward different assessment techniques and approaches to give an interested reader starting points for finding further information in the area. Automatic assessment tools can be used to help teachers in grading tasks as well as to support students' working process with automatic feedback. Common advantages of automation are the speed, availability, consistency and objectivity of assessment. However, automatic tools emphasize the need for careful pedagogical design of the assignment and assessment settings. To effectively share the knowledge and good assessment solutions already developed, better interoperability and portability of the tools is needed.}, invalid_isbn = {0899-3408}, issn = {0899-3408}, pages = {83–102}, pdf_locked = {False}, doi = {10.1080/08993400500150747}, url = {http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08993400500150747}, file = {2000/2000/2005/AlaMutka/AlaMutka_2005_A_Survey_of_Automated_Assessment_Approac.pdf}, } @book{alexander05_cambr_compan_durkh_, title = {The Cambridge Companion to Durkheim}, editor = {Alexander, Jeffrey C. and Smith, Philip}, year = {2005}, tags = {embodiment, emile_durkheim, france, ritual, social_order, sociology, suicide, typology}, publisher = {Cambridge University Press}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {978-0-521-00151-9}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Alexander/Alexander_2005_The_Cambridge_Companion_to_Durkheim.pdf}, } @article{anger05_glimp_answer_set_progr_19_, title = {A Glimpse of Answer Set Programming}, author = {Anger, C and Konczak, K and Linke, T and Schaub, T}, year = {2005}, tags = {ansprolog, answer_set, logic, prolog, reasoning}, journal = {Künstliche Intelligenz}, volume = {19}, number = {1}, pages = {12–17}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Anger/Anger_2005_A_Glimpse_of_Answer_Set_Programming.pdf}, } @book{appiah05_ethic_ident_, title = {The Ethics of Identity}, author = {Appiah, Kwame Anthony}, year = {2005}, tags = {culture, ethics, identity, politics, text_book}, publisher = {Princeton University Press}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {0-691-12036-6}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Appiah/Appiah_2005_The_Ethics_of_Identity.pdf}, } @proceedings{arai05_agent_based_model_meets_gamin_simul_, title = {Agent-Based Modeling Meets Gaming Simulation}, author = {Arai, K. and Deghuchi, H. and Matsui, H.}, year = {2005}, tags = {ABM, agent_based_modeling, agents, ai, disruptive_technology, game_theory, games, markets, MAS, simulation}, journal = {Agent-Based Social Systems}, publisher = {Springer}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {978-4-431-29426-9}, doi = {10.1007/4-431-29427-9}, url = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/4-431-29427-9}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Arai/Arai_2005_Agent_Based_Modeling_Meets_Gaming_Simula.pdf}, } @inproceedings{arbab05_abstr_55_, title = {Abstract behavior types}, subtitle = {A foundation model for components and their composition}, author = {Arbab, Farhad}, year = {2005}, tags = {abstract_behaviour_types, ABT, behaviour, components, composition, coordination, reo, semantics, streams}, booktitle = {Science of Computer Programming}, volume = {55}, number = {1-3 SPEC. ISS.}, abstract = {The notion of Abstract Data Type (ADT) has served as a foundation model for structured and object oriented programming for some thirty years. The current trend in software engineering toward component based systems requires a foundation model as well. The most basic inherent property of an ADT, i.e., that it provides a set of operations, subverts some highly desirable properties in emerging formal models for components that are based on the object oriented paradigm. We introduce the notion of Abstract Behavior Type (ABT) as a higher-level alternative to ADT and propose it as a proper foundation model for both components and their composition. An ABT defines an abstract behavior as a relation among a set of timed-data-streams, without specifying any detail about the operations that may be used to implement such behavior or the data types it may manipulate for its realization. The ABT model supports a much looser coupling than is possible with the ADT's operational interface, and is inherently amenable to exogenous coordination. We propose that both of these are highly desirable, if not essential, properties for models of components and their composition. To demonstrate the utility of the ABT model, we describe Reo: an exogenous coordination language for compositional construction of component connectors based on a calculus of channels. We show the expressive power of Reo, and the applicability of ABT, through a number of examples. ©2004 Elsevier B.V. = {In recent years, there has been significant progress in developingInteractive Storytelling systems, in particular in terms of theunderlying AI techniques. There has been an emerging consensus on theAI approach, in particular the use of planning systems. However, thesehave concentrated on the generation of a sequence of narrative actions, staged through the behaviour of virtual actors. In order to achieve thelong-term objective of implementing interactive media that wouldreproduce the aesthetic qualities of traditional films, mostinteractive storytelling systems are still missing the ability togenerate dialogues between characters. We describe an extension of ourInteractive Storytelling approach which integrates dialogue generationwithin narrative situations. Our unit of generation is the dialogue act(pair of utterances) and one main objective is to reproduce realisticdialogue phenomena based on implicit forms of expression. The emphasisis also on adopting a unified approach relating narrativerepresentations to the linguistic form of the generated utterances. From a representation of active narrative goals and the emotionalaffinity between characters, our system is able to derive a set ofparameters governing various aspects of the linguistic form to begenerated. We illustrate this approach on several implemented examples.}, pages = {21–26}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {1-57735-235-1}, url = {https://ojs.aaai.org/index.php/AIIDE/article/download/18710/18488}, url2 = {https://research.tees.ac.uk/en/publications/dialogue-generation-in-character-based-interactive-storytelling}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Cavazza/Cavazza_2005_Dialogue_Generation_in_Character_Based_I.pdf}, } @inproceedings{chee05_under_korean_, title = {Understanding Korean experiences of online game hype , identity , and the menace of the}, author = {Chee, Florence}, year = {2005}, tags = {addition, culture, ethnography, korea, online_games, Wang_tta}, booktitle = {DiGRA}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Chee/Chee_2005_Understanding_Korean_experiences_of_onli.pdf}, } @inproceedings{chen05_evaluat_author_lever_drama_manag_, title = {Evaluating the Authorial Leverage of Drama Management}, author = {Chen, Sherol and Nelson, Mark J and Sullivan, Anne and Mateas, Michael}, year = {2005}, tags = {authorial_leverage, authoring, branching, complexity, drama_management, framework, metrics, policy_change, procedural_content, statistics}, booktitle = {AAAI Spring Symposium: Intelligent Narrative Technologies II}, pages = {20–23}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Chen/Chen_2005_Evaluating_the_Authorial_Leverage_of_Dra.pdf}, } @book{cleary05_cambr_compan_moder_irish_cultur_, title = {The Cambridge Companion to Modern Irish Culture}, editor = {Cleary, Joe and Connolly, Claire}, year = {2005}, tags = {anthropology, culture, ireland}, publisher = {Cambridge University Press}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {0-521-52629-9}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Cleary/Cleary_2005_The_Cambridge_Companion_to_Modern_Irish_.pdf}, } @report{cochrane05_writin_tips_ph_, title = {Writing Tips for Ph.d Students}, author = {Cochrane, John H}, year = {2005}, tags = {__printed, methods, research, writing}, institution = {University of Chicago}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Cochrane/Cochrane_2005_Writing_Tips_for_Ph_d_Students.pdf}, } @unpublished{cohen05_contr_scalin_distr_agent_system_, title = {Control and Scaling of Distributed Agent Systems}, author = {Cohen, Philip R. and Maier, David}, year = {2005}, tags = {agents, distributed_systems, scaling}, institution = {Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology}, note = {Project Proposal}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Cohen/Cohen_2005_Control_and_Scaling_of_Distributed_Agent.pdf}, } @inproceedings{colle05_scenar_, title = {Scenario analysis based on linear logic}, author = {Collé, Frédéric and Champagnat, Ronan and Prigent, Armelle}, year = {2005}, tags = {linear_logic, narrative, petri_net, scenario}, booktitle = {ACM SIGCHI International Conference on Advances in computer entertainment technology, ACE}, pdf_locked = {False}, doi = {10.1145/1178477.1178583}, url = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1145/1178477.1178583}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Coll/Coll_2005_Scenario_analysis_based_on_linear_logic.pdf}, } @inproceedings{collins05_progr_languag_as_music_instr_, title = {The Programming Language As a Musical Instrument}, author = {Collins, Nick and Blackwell, Allan}, year = {2005}, tags = {analysis, ChucK, ethnography, live_coding, music, programming, psychology}, booktitle = {17th Workshop of the Psychology of Programming Interest Group}, abstract = {This paper considers how to achieve new creative advances in the design of programming languages. It provides means to associate partial class and method definitions with layers and to activate and deactivate such layers in the control flow of a running program. When a layer is activated, the partial definitions become part of the program until this layer is deactivated. This has the effect that the behavior of a program can be modified according to the context of its use without the need to mention such context dependencies in the affected base program. We illustrate these ideas by providing different UI views on the same object while, at the same time, keeping the conceptual simplicity of object-oriented programming that objects know by themselves how to behave, in our case how to display themselves. These seemingly contradictory goals can be achieved by separating class definitions into distinct layers instead of factoring out the display code into different classes.}, issn = {0167-594X (Print) 0167-594X (Linking)}, pages = {1–10}, pdf_locked = {False}, pmid = {16205966}, isbn = {1-59593-283-6}, doi = {10.1145/1146841.1146842}, url = {http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?doid=1146841.1146842}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Costanza/Costanza_2005_Language_constructs_for_context_oriented.pdf}, } @book{cox05__settin_agend_, title = {Setting the Agenda}, subtitle = {Responsible Party Government in the U.S. House of Representatives}, author = {Cox, Gary W. and Mccubbins, Mathew D.}, year = {2005}, tags = {agenda_setting, political_parties, political_science, procedural_cartel_theory}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {978-0-521-85379-8}, url = {http://www.cambridge.org/9780521853798}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Cox/Cox_2005_Setting_the_Agenda.pdf}, } @article{cox05_metac_compt_189_, title = {Metacognition in Comptation}, subtitle = {A Selected Research Review}, author = {Cox, M T}, year = {2005}, tags = {cognitive, computation, meta, review}, journal = {Artificial Intelligence}, volume = {189}, pages = {104–141}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Cox/Cox_2005_Metacognition_in_Comptation.pdf}, } @article{craven05_distan_causat_c_79_, title = {Distant Causation in C+}, author = {Craven, Robert and Sergot, Marek J.}, year = {2005}, tags = {action_language, c_plus, causation, deontic_logic, time}, journal = {Studia Logica}, volume = {79}, number = {1}, bibsource = {dblp computer science bibliography, https://dblp.org}, biburl = {https://dblp.org/rec/journals/sLogica/CravenS05.bib}, pages = {73–96}, pdf_locked = {False}, timestamp = {Tue, 01 Sep 2020 01:00:00 +0200}, doi = {10.1007/s11225-005-0495-8}, url = {https://doi.org/10.1007/s11225-005-0495-8}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Craven/Craven_2005_Distant_Causation_in_C_.pdf}, } @thesis{crestani05__new_garbag_collec_xemac_, title = {A New Garbage Collector for XEmacs}, author = {Crestani, Marcus}, year = {2005}, tags = {emacs, garbage_collection, memory_management}, institution = {Univertät Tübingen}, pdf_locked = {False}, type = {masters}, url = {http://mcrestani.com/xemacs/pdf/thesis-newgc.pdf}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Crestani/Crestani_2005_A_New_Garbage_Collector_for_XEmacs.pdf}, } @proceedings{dautenhahn05__aisb0_5_, title = {Proceedings of the Symposium on Normative Multi-Agent Systems}, editor = {Dautenhahn, Kerstin}, year = {2005}, tags = {agents, ai, AISB, BDI, commitment, emotion, KGP, markets, MAS, norms, obligations, ontology, open_systems, robert_brandom, robotics, self_regulation, society}, volume = {5}, invalid_isbn = {1902956476}, pdf_locked = {False}, url = {https://aisb.org.uk/convention-proceedings/}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Dautenhahn/Dautenhahn_2005_AISB.pdf}, } @proceedings{dautenhahn05_proceed_joint_sympos_social_inspir_comput_aisb0_, title = {Proceedings of the Joint Symposium on Socially Inspired Computing (AISB'05)}, editor = {Dautenhahn, Kerstin}, year = {2005}, tags = {agents, AISB, cultural_evolution, distributed_systems, emergence, environment, evaluation, evolution, flow, gossip, language, meme, metaphor, risk, robotics, social, society, stigmergy, tag, visualisation}, invalid_isbn = {1902956484}, pdf_locked = {False}, url = {https://aisb.org.uk/convention-proceedings/}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Dautenhahn/Dautenhahn_2005_Proceedings_of_the_Joint_Symposium_on_So.pdf}, } @thesis{davies05__pract_refin_type_check_, title = {Practical Refinement-Type Checking}, author = {Davies, Rowan}, year = {2005}, tags = {bidirectional_type_checking, bidirectional_type_system, intersection_types, programming_language, regular_tree_types, type_systems, value_restricted_polymorphism}, number = {CMU-CS-05-110}, pdf_locked = {False}, type = {phd}, url = {http://reports-archive.adm.cs.cmu.edu/anon/anon/home/ftp/usr/ftp/2005/CMU-CS-05-110.pdf}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Davies/Davies_2005_Practical_Refinement_Type_Checking.pdf}, } @inproceedings{dignum05_omni_, title = {Omni}, subtitle = {Introducing Social Structure, Norms and Ontologies Into Agent Organizations}, author = {Dignum, Virginia and Vázquez-Salceda, Javier and Dignum, Frank}, year = {2005}, tags = {agents, framework, GAIA, ISLANDER, norms, OMNI, ontology, organisation, rule, social, SoDA, structure, TROPOS}, booktitle = {Programming Multi-Agent Systems Second International Workshop ProMAS 2004}, abstract = {In this paper, we propose a framework for modelling agent organizations, Omni, that allows the balance of global organizational requirements with the autonomy of individual agents. The normative state of a contract, at a particular time, is the aggregation of instances of normative relations that hold between contract parties at that time, plus the current values of contract variables. The effects of contract events on the normative state of a contract are specified using an XML formalisation of the Event Calculus, called ecXML. We use an example mail service agreement from the domain of web services to ground the discussion of our work. The challenge is how to express and enforce such conditions so that truly autonomous agents can adscribe to them. One way of addressing this issue is to look at MAS as environments regulated by some sort of normative framework. There have been significant contributions to the formal aspects of such normative frameworks, but there are few proposals that have made them operational. In this paper a possible step towards closing that gap is suggested. A normative language is introduced which is expressive enough to represent the familiar types of MAS-inspired normative frameworks; its implementation in JESS is also shown. This proposal is aimed at adding flexibility and generality to electronic institutions by extending their deontic components through richer types of norms that can still be enforced on-line.}, pages = abstract = {The Supreme Court has continued to write constitutional history over the thirteen years since publication of the highly acclaimed first edition of The Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court. Two new justices have joined the high court, more than 800 cases have been decided, and a good deal of new scholarship has appeared on many of the topics treated in the Companion. Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist presided over the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, and the Court as a whole played a decisive and controversial role in the outcome of the 2000 presidential election. Under Rehnquists's leadership, a bare majority of the justices have rewritten significant areas of the law dealing with federalism, sovereign immunity, and the commerce power. This new edition includes new entries on key cases and fully updated treatment of crucial areas of constitutional law, such as abortion, freedom of religion, school desegregation, freedom of speech, voting rights, military tribunals, and the rights of the accused. In this case, imaging data simply comprise another dependent variable, along with behavioural data, that can be used to test competing theories. In particular, I distinguish two types of inference: function-to-structure deduction and structure-to-function induction. With the former inference, a qualitatively different pattern of activity over the brain under two experimental conditions implies at least one different function associated with changes in the independent variable. With the second type of inference, activity of the same brain region(s) under two conditions implies a common function, possibly not predicted a priori. I illustrate these inferences with imaging studies of recognition memory, short-term memory, and repetition priming. I then consider in greater detail what is meant by a ”systematic” function-structure mapping and argue that, particularly for structure-to-function induction, this entails a one-to-one mapping between functional and structural units, although the structural unit may be a network of interacting regions and care must be taken over the appropriate level of functional/structural abstraction. Nonetheless, the assumption of a systematic function-structure mapping is a ”working hypothesis” that, in common with other scientific fields, cannot be proved on independent grounds and is probably best evaluated by the success of the enterprise as a whole. I also consider statistical issues such as the definition of a qualitative difference and methodological issues such as the relationship between imaging and behavioural data. I finish by reviewing various objections to neuroimaging, including neophrenology, functionalism, and equipotentiality, and by observing some criticisms of current practice in the imaging literature.}, invalid_isbn = {0272-4987}, issn = {02724987}, month = {feb}, pages = {193–233}, pdf_locked = {False}, pmid = {15903115}, doi = {10.1080/02724980443000502}, url = {http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15903115}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Henson/Henson_2005_What_Can_Functional_Neuroimaging_Tell_th.pdf}, } @book{hier05_contem_sociol_thoug_, title = {Contemprary Sociological Thought}, subtitle = {Themes and Theories}, editor = {Hier, Sean P.}, year = {2005}, tags = {antonio_gramsci, bell_hooks, erving_goffman, ethnomethodology, feminism, georg_simmel, history, howard_becker, life_politics, metropolis, michel_foucault, modernity, moral_capital, pierre_bourdieu, robert_merton, social_control, sociology, state_theory, symbolic_interaction, talcot_parsons}, publisher = {Canadian Scholars' Press}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {1-55130-288-8}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Hier/Hier_2005_Contemprary_Sociological_Thought.pdf}, } @book{hoare05__codex_tau_empir_, title = {Codex Tau Empire}, author = {Hoare, Andy}, year = {2005}, tags = {40k, codex, rule_book}, edition = {4}, publisher = {Games Workshop}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {1-84154-712-3}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Hoare/Codex Tau Empire 4th Edition.pdf}, } @article{hofstede05_role_playin_with_synth_cultur_49_, title = {Role Playing With Synthetic Cultures}, subtitle = {The Evasive Rules of the Game}, author = {Hofstede, Gert Jan}, year = {2005}, tags = {culture, games, management, simulation, synthetic_culture}, journal = {Experimental Interactive Learning in Industrial Management: New approaches to Learning, Studying and Teaching}, volume = {49}, pages = {14}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Hofstede/Hofstede_2005_Role_Playing_With_Synthetic_Cultures.pdf}, } @article{hong05_evolv_react_npcs_real_time_simul_game_05_, title = {Evolving Reactive Npcs for the Real-Time Simulation Game}, author = {Hong, Jinhyuk and Cho, Sung-Bae}, year = {2005}, tags = {ai, evolution, NPC, reactive}, journal = {Artificial Life}, volume = {05}, number = {April}, pages = {86–93}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Hong/Hong_2005_Evolving_Reactive_Npcs_for_the_Real_Time.pdf}, } @inproceedings{horswill05_robot_archit_believ_game_agent_, title = {Robot Architectures for Believable Game Agents}, author = {Horswill, Ian D and Zubek, Robert}, year = {2005}, tags = {ai, behaviour, believable_agents, inference, robotics, role_passing, roles}, booktitle = {AAAI Artificial Intelligence and Computer Games}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Horswill/Horswill_2005_Robot_Architectures_for_Believable_Game_.pdf}, } @article{huhns05_servic_orien_comput_9_, title = {Service-Oriented Computing}, subtitle = {Key Concepts and Principles}, author = {Huhns, M.N. and Singh, M.P.}, year = {2005}, tags = {abstraction, CASE, MAS, service_oriented_architecture, software_engineering}, journal = {IEEE Internet Computing}, volume = {9}, number = {1}, pages = {75-81}, pdf_locked = {False}, doi = {10.1109/mic.2005.21}, url = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/MIC.2005.21}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Huhns/Huhns_2005_Service_Oriented_Computing.pdf}, } @book{irish05_game_produc_handb_, title = {The Game Producer's Handbook}, author = {Irish, Dan}, year = {2005}, tags = {design, game_development, games, text_book}, publisher = {Premier Press}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {2-00-411448-7}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Irish/Irish_2005_The_Game_Producer_s_Handbook.pdf}, } @article{ishibuchi05_rule_weigh_specif_fuzzy_rule_13_, title = {Rule Weight Specification in Fuzzy Rule-Based Classification Systems}, author = {Ishibuchi, Hisao and Yamamoto, Takashi}, year = {2005}, tags = {classification, data_mining, fuzzy_systems, pattern_classification, rule, rule_generation}, journal = {IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems}, volume = {13}, number = {4}, abstract = { This paper shows how the rule weight of each fuzzy rule can be specified in fuzzy rule-based classification systems. Game designers employ a range of techniques to promote long-term user engagement and motivation. These techniques are increasingly being employed in so-called serious games, games that have non-entertainment purposes such as education or training. Although such games share the goal of AIED of promoting deep learner engagement with subject matter, the techniques employed are very different. Can AIED technologies complement and enhance serious game design techniques, or does good serious game design render AIED techniques superfluous? This paper explores these questions in the context of the Tactical Language Training System (TLTS), a program that supports rapid acquisition of foreign language and cultural skills. The TLTS combines game design principles and game development tools with learner modelling, pedagogical agents, and pedagogical dramas. Learners carry out missions in a simulated game world, interacting with non-player characters. A virtual aide assists the learners if they run into difficulties, and gives performance feedback in the context of preparatory exercises. Artificial intelligence plays a key role in controlling the behaviour of the non-player characters in the game; intelligent tutoring provides supplementary scaffolding.}, issn = {0922-6389}, pages = {306–313}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {1-58603-530-4}, url = {https://dl.acm.org/doi/proceedings/10.5555/1562524}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Johnson/Johnson_2005_Serious_Games_for_Language_Learning.pdf}, } @judicial{jones05_kitzm_dover_area_school_distr_, title = {Kitzmiller v Dover Area School District}, author = {Jones, Judge}, year = {2005}, tags = {creationism, free_speech, intelligent_design, judicial_opinion, judiciary, religious_freedom, SCOTUS}, institution = {U.S District Court for The Middle District of Pennsylvania}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Jones/Jones_2005_Kitzmiller_v_Dover_Area_School_District.pdf}, } @book{josephson05_total_, title = {Totalitarian science and technology}, author = {Josephson, Paul R}, year = {2005}, tags = {history_of_science, ideology, politics, regime, science, totalitarianism}, publisher = {Humanity Books}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {1-59102-321-1}, url = {https://digitalcommons.colby.edu/facultybooks/2}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Josephson/Josephson_2005_Totalitarian_science_and_technology.pdf}, } @book{jungnickel05_graph_networ_algor_, title = {Graphs, Networks and Algorithms}, author = {Jungnickel, Dieter}, year = {2005}, tags = {algorithm, circulation, coloring, computer_science, flow, graph, graph_theory, network, simplex}, publisher = {Springer}, pdf_locked = {False}, doi = {10.1007/978-3-540-72780-4}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Jungnickel/Jungnickel_2005_Graphs_Networks_and_Algorithms.pdf}, } @book{kamar05_unwil_mother_unwan_babies_, title = {Unwilling Mothers, Unwanted Babies}, subtitle = {Infanticide in Canada}, author = {Kamar, Kirsten Johnson}, year = {2005}, tags = {abortion, canada, history, infanticide, justice, law, pregnancy}, publisher = {University of British Columbia Press}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {0-7748-1176-5}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Kamar/Kamar_2005_Unwilling_Mothers_Unwanted_Babies.pdf}, } @book{kapur05_public_instit_india_, title = {Public Institutions in India}, subtitle = {Performance and Design}, editor = {Kapur, Devesh and Mehta, Pratap Bhanu}, year = {2005}, tags = {banking, civil_service, economics, india, institution, judiciary, parliament, police, politics, regulation}, publisher = {Oxford University Press}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {978-0-19-566726-4}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Kapur/Kapur_2005_Public_Institutions_in_India.pdf}, } @inproceedings{kaye05_commun_, title = {Communicating intimacy one bit at a time}, author = {Kaye, Joseph 'Jofish' and Levitt, Mariah K. and Nevins, Jeffrey and Golden, Jessica and Schmidt, Vanessa}, year = {2005}, tags = {communication, gifts, HCI, minimal_intimacy, prototype, technology}, booktitle = {CHI}, publisher = {ACM Press}, address = {New York, New York, USA}, pages = {1529}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {1-59593-002-7}, doi = {10.1145/1056808.1056958}, url = {http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?doid=1056808.1056958}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Kaye/Kaye_2005_Communicating_intimacy_one_bit_at_a_time.pdf}, } @book{kearney05_routl_histor_philos_volum_viii_, title = {Routledge History of Philosophy Volume VIII}, subtitle = {Continental Philosophy in the 20th Century}, author = {Kearney, Richard}, year = {2005}, tags = {adorno, antonio_gramsci, claude_levi_strauss, emile_durkheim, ferdinand_de_saussure, gadamer, jacques_derrida, jacques_lacan, jean_baudrillard, jean_lyotard, jean_paul_sartre, jurgen_habermas, louis_althusser, marcel, martin_heidegger, maurice_merleau_ponty, max_horkheimer, michel_foucault, paul_ricoeur, philosophy, review, roland_barthes, simone_de_beauvoir, text_book, vladimir_lenin}, publisher = {Routledge}, abstract = {Continental philosophy is one of the twentieth century's most important and challenging philosophical movements. However, Langdridge and Butt (2004) find little evidence of the emergence of a coherent sadomasochistic identity. They contend that the transgressive nature of the sexual in sadomasochism makes it difficult for participants in such practices to achieve legitimate “sexual citizenship” (Weeks, 1998). In this article, we note the emergence of an alternative construction of sadomasochistic practices; one that emphasises the erotic exchange of power. This illustrates both personal and social moments in the construction of erotic life. It expects familiarity with calculus, probability theory, and linear algebra as taught in a rst- or secondyear undergraduate course on mathematics for scientists and engineers. Conventional courses on information theory cover not only the beautiful theoretical ideas of Shannon, but also practical solutions to communication problems. This book goes further, bringing in Bayesian data modelling, Monte Carlo methods, variational methods, clustering algorithms, and neural networks. Why unify information theory and machine learning? Because they are two sides of the same coin. In the 1960s, a single eld, cybernetics, was populated by information theorists, computer scientists, and neuroscientists, all studying common problems. Information theory and machine learning still belong together. Brains are the ultimate compression and communication systems. A leader in applying game theory to the understanding of institutional analysis, Elinor Ostrom provides in this book a coherent method for undertaking the analysis of diverse economic, political, and social institutions. Understanding Institutional Diversity explains the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework, which enables a scholar to choose the most relevant level of interaction for a particular question. This framework examines the arena within which interactions occur, the rules employed by participants to order relationships, the attributes of a biophysical world that structures and is structured by interactions, and the attributes of a community in which a particular arena is placed. The book explains and illustrates how to use the IAD in the context of both field and experimental studies. Belief revision describes how an agent is supposed to change his own mind, while argumentation deals with persuasive strategies employed to change the mind of other agents. These are two sides (cognitive and social) of the same epistemic coin: argumentation theories are incomplete, if they cannot be grounded in belief revision models - and vice versa. Nonetheless, so far the formal treatment of belief revision mostly neglected any systematic comparison with argumentation theories. In MAS such problem becomes evident and inescapable: belief change is usually triggered by communication and persuasion from other agents, involving deception, trust, reputation, negotiation, conflict resolution (all typical issues faced by argumentation-based models). Therefore, a closer comparison between belief revision and argumentation is a necessary preliminary step towards an integrated model of epistemic change in MAS.}, issn = {03029743}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {3-540-24526-X}, doi = {10.1007/978-3-540-32261-0_6}, url = {http://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-540-32261-0_6}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Paglieri/Paglieri_2005_Revising_Beliefs_Through_Arguments.pdf}, } @article{paolo05_autop_adapt_teleol_agenc_4_, title = {Autopoiesis, Adaptivity, Teleology, Agency}, author = {Paolo, Ezequiel A. and Di Paolo, Ezequiel A.}, year = {2005}, tags = {adaptivity, agents, autopoiesis, behaviour, language, layers, phenomenology, sense_making, teleology}, journal = {Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences}, volume = {4}, number = {4}, abstract = {A proposal for the biological grounding of intrinsic teleology and sense-making through the theory of autopoiesis is critically evaluated. One of the focuses of intelligent virtual agent research in general and story generation research in particular is how to make agents/characters more lifelike and compelling. However, one question that invariably comes up is: Is the generated story good? An easier question to tackle is whether a reader/viewer of a generated story perceives certain essential attributes such as causal coherence and character believability. Character believability is the perception that story world characters are acting according to their own beliefs, desires, and intentions. We present a novel procedure for objectively evaluating stories generated for multiple agents/characters with regard to character intentionality - an important aspect of character believability. The process transforms generated stories into a standardized model of story comprehension and then indirectly compares that representation to reader/viewer mental perceptions about the story. More recently however, the importance of emotion in human-like intelligence and behaviour has been identified. This project aims at exploring this aspect of Artificial Intelligence by modeling the ability to display emotions in autonomous software agents within the constraints of a virtual environment. The motivation behind this is to determine whether the behaviour of these agents will cause the human participant to interact with the agent as if interacting with other humans. We have created an Agent-Cocktail Party World for this purpose and an Avatar-Cocktail Party World for the purpose of studying the psychological phenomenon of Ostracism. Our results show that the addition of an emotion-based intelligent component was able to make a statistically significant difference to the experimental condition by creating a more realistic environment in which to simulate the Punitive Ostracism condition. Buzz words are over used; as a result their meanings often get distorted and overextended and they burn-out of existence. Mizruchi and Fein (1999) showed in the institutional theory literature how meanings get distorted and then taken for granted. To avoid misunderstandings of the institutional logic concept and to build on research in this genre, now is the time to reflect on definitions and the theoretical and methodological contributions this perspec- tive brings to the analysis of institutions. We begin by defining the concept of an institutional logic and how it emerged as part of the development of institutional theory since the 1970s. Second, we illustrate the institutional logics approach as both a meta- theory and a method of analysis. Third, we present a select review of the literature emphasizing how the institutional logics approach makes headway in addressing sev- eral limitations and tensions identified by scholars of institutional analysis. In this review we focus on an analysis of the implicit and explicit social mechanisms employed in these studies, not on the description or strength of their empirical findings. Last, we critique the literature on institutional logics and suggest how the approach can be used to further advance the study of organizations and institutions.}, arxivid = {00028282}, issn = {00029602}, pages = {99–129}, pdf_locked = {False}, pmid = {1513372}, series = {SAGE Handbooks}, isbn = {978-1-4129-3123-6}, file = {2000/2000/2005/Thornton/Thornton_2005_Institutional_Logics.pdf}, } @article{twidale05__let_them_use_emacs_, title = {”Let Them Use Emacs”}, subtitle = {The Interaction Of Simplicity And Appropriation}, author = {Twidale, Michael B. and Jones, M.
