Many theories that attempt to answer this question have appeared recently in the context of widespread interest about consciousness in the cognitive neurosciences. Most of these proposals are formulated in terms of the information processing conducted by the brain. In this overview, we survey and contrast these models. We first delineate several notions of consciousness, addressing what it is that the various models are attempting to explain. Next, we describe a conceptual landscape that addresses how the theories attempt to explain consciousness. We then situate each of several representative models in this landscape and indicate which aspect of consciousness they try to explain. We conclude that the search for the neural correlates of consciousness should be usefully complemented by a search for the computational correlates of consciousness.}, issn = {1879-307X}, month = {oct}, pages = {372-382}, pdf_locked = {False}, pmid = {11025280}, url = {http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11025280}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Atkinson/Atkinson_2000_Consciousness.pdf}, } @article{baase00_comput_algor_third_edition_solut_, title = {Computer Algorithms, Third Edition, Solutions To Selected Exercises}, author = {Baase, Sara}, year = {2000}, tags = {algorithm, solution, text_book}, journal = {Solutions}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Baase/Baase_2000_Computer_Algorithms_Third_Edition_Solu.pdf}, } @inproceedings{baddeley00_4_, title = {The Episodic Buffer}, subtitle = {A New Component Of Working Memory?}, author = {Baddeley, Alan}, year = {2000}, tags = {episodic, memory, psychology}, booktitle = {Trends in cognitive sciences}, volume = {4}, number = {11}, abstract = {In 1974, Baddeley and Hitch proposed a three-component model of working memory. Over the years, this has been successful in giving an integrated account not only of data from normal adults, but also neuropsychological, developmental and neuroimaging data. There are, however, a number of phenomena that are not readily captured by the original model. These are outlined here and a fourth component to the model, the episodic buffer, is proposed. It comprises a limited capacity system that provides temporary storage of information held in a multimodal code, which is capable of binding information from the subsidiary systems, and from long-term memory, into a unitary episodic representation. Conscious awareness is assumed to be the principal mode of retrieval from the buffer. The revised model differs from the old principally in focussing attention on the processes of integrating information, rather than on the isolation of the subsystems. In doing so, it provides a better basis for tackling the more complex aspects of executive control in working memory.}, issn = {1879-307X}, month = {nov}, pages = {417-423}, pdf_locked = {False}, pmid = {11058819}, url = {http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11058819}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Baddeley/Baddeley_2000_The_episodic_buffer.pdf}, } @inproceedings{badler00_param_action_repres_virtual_human_agent_, title = {A Parameterized Action Representation for Virtual Human Agents}, author = {Badler, Norman I and Bourne, Juliet C}, year = {2000}, tags = {3D, action, avatar, PAR, representation}, booktitle = {AAAI}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Badler/Badler_2000_A_Parameterized_Action_Representation_fo.pdf}, } @report{bagwell00__fast_and_space_effic_trie_searc_, title = {Fast And Space Efficient Trie Searches}, author = {Bagwell, Phil}, year = {2000}, tags = {ACT, AMT, array_compacted_trees, array_mapped_tries, data_structure, search, trie, tries, TST}, pdf_locked = {False}, url = {https://infoscience.epfl.ch/record/64394}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Bagwell/Bagwell_2000_Fast_And_Space_Efficient_Trie_Searches.pdf}, } @book{banks00_look_to_windw_7_, title = {Look To Windward}, author = {Banks, Iain M}, year = {2000}, tags = {science_fiction}, volume = {7}, publisher = {Time Warner Books}, series = {The Culture}, isbn = {978-1-84149-059-5}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Banks/Banks_2000_Look_To_Windward.epub}, } @book{barnes00_arist_, title = {Aristotle}, subtitle = {A Very Short Introduction}, author = {Barnes, Jonathan}, year = {2000}, tags = {aristotle, ethics, greece, history, logic, philosophy}, publisher = {Oxford University Press}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {0-19-285408-9}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Barnes/Barnes_2000_Aristotle.pdf}, } @misc{beard00_class_, title = {Classics}, subtitle = {A Very Short Introduction}, author = {Beard, Mary and Henderson, John}, year = {2000}, tags = {ancient_greece, ancient_world, british_museum, classics, greece, history, romans}, publisher = {Oxford University Press}, pdf_locked = {False}, series = {Very Short Introductions}, isbn = {0-19-285385-6}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Beard/Beard_2000_Classics.pdf}, } @report{beck00_new_tools_new_tests_compar_, title = {New Tools and New Tests in Comparative Political Economy The Database of Political Institutions}, author = {Beck, Thorsten and Clarke, George and Groff, Alberto and Keefer, Philip and Walsh, Patrick}, year = {2000}, tags = {__come_back_to, database_on_political_institutions, economics, institution}, institution = {World Bank}, pdf_locked = {False}, url = {http://hdl.handle.net/10986/19850}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Beck/Beck_2000_New_Tools_and_New_Tests_in_Comparative_P.pdf}, } @book{bedau00_artif_life_vii_, title = {Artificial Life VII}, editor = {Bedau, Mark A. and McCaskill, John S. and Packard, Norman H. and Rasmussen, Steen}, year = {2000}, tags = {artificial_intelligence, artificial_life, autonomous_agents, communication, evolution, robotics, self_organisation}, publisher = {MIT Press}, invalid_isbn = {0-262-5290-X}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Bedau/Bedau_2000_Artificial_Life_VII.pdf}, } @article{bench-capon00_8_, title = {A method for the computational modelling of dialectical argument with dialogue games}, author = {Bench-Capon, Trevor J. Suppose two contestants could win 1,000 Pounds if they picked the same color card; the first picks black, the second red, and they lose. The temporality effect refers to the tendency to think they would have won if the second player had picked black. Individuals also think that the second player will experience more guilt and be blamed more by the first. We report the results of five experiments that examine the nature of this effect. The first three experiments examine the temporality effect in scenarios in which the game is stopped after the first contestant's card selection because of a technical hitch, and then is restarted. When the first player picks a different card, the temporality effect is eliminated, for scenarios based on implicit and explicit negation and for good outcomes. When the first player picks the same card, the temporality effect occurs in each of these situations. The second two experiments show that it depends on the order of events in the world, not their descriptive order. It occurs for scenarios without preconceptions about normal descriptive order; it occurs whether the second event is mentioned in second place or first. The results are consistent with the idea that the temporality effect arises because the first event is presupposed and so it is immutable; and the elimination of the temporality effect arises because the availability of a counterfactual alternative to the first event creates an opposing tendency to mutate it. We sketch a putative account of these effects based on characteristics of the mental models people construct when they think counterfactually.}, invalid_isbn = {0090-502X}, issn = {0090-502X}, month = {mar}, pages = {264-281}, pdf_locked = {False}, pmid = {10790981}, doi = {10.3758/BF03213805}, url = {http://www.springerlink.com/index/10.3758/BF03213805}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Byrne/Byrne_2000_The_Temporality_Effect_in_Counterfactual.pdf}, } @inproceedings{cappelli00_synth_finger_image_gener_15_, title = {Synthetic Fingerprint-Image Generation}, author = {Cappelli, R. and Erol, A. and Maio, D. and Maltoni, D.}, year = {2000}, tags = {fingerprint, graphics, image, procedural_content}, booktitle = {Proceedings-International Conference on Pattern Recognition}, volume = {15}, number = {3}, abstract = {Introduces a method for the generation of synthetic fingerprint images. It will be argued that, as well as providing a scientific rationale for eating, nutrition forms the moral basis of modern food choice, requiring us to rationalise our food pleasures. Food, Morals and Meaning first explores the way that concerns about food, the body and pleasure were prefigured in antiquity and then how these concerns were recast in early Christianity as problems of 'natural' appetite which had to be curbed. The following chapters discuss how scientific knowledge about food was constructed out of philosophical and religious concerns about indulgence and excess in eighteenth-and nineteenth-century Europe. By analysing current strategies to promote healthy diets, the book provides an original insight into the construction of social categories like 'good eaters', 'responsible parents' and 'healthy children'. Finally, by using research collected from in-depth interviews with families, the last section focuses on the social organisation of food in the modern home to illustrate the ways that the meal table now incorporates the principles of nutrition as a form of moral training, especially for children. It offers a thoroughly revised and updated chapter on graph minors, which now includes full new proofs of two of the central Robertson-Seymour theorems (as well as a detailed sketch of the entire proof of their celebrated Graph Minor Theorem). The approach distinguishes between short-lived goal-directed actions and durable, object-oriented activity systems. A historically evolving collective activity system, seen in its network relations to other activity systems, is taken as the prime unit of analysis against which scripted strings of goal-directed actions and automatic operations are interpreted. Activity systems are driven by communal motives that are often difficult to articulate for individual participants. Activity systems are in constant movement and internally contradictory. Their systemic contradictions, manifested in disturbances and mundane innovations, offer possibilities for expansive developmental transformations. Such transformations proceed through stepwise cycles of expansive learning which begin with actions of questioning the existing standard practice, then proceed to actions of analyzing its contradictions and modelling a vision for its zone of proximal development, then to actions of examining and implementing the new model in practice. New forms of work organization increasingly require negotiated 'knotworking' across boundaries. Correspondingly, expansive learning increasingly involves horizontal widening of collective expertise by means of debating, negotiating and hybridizing different perspectives and conceptualizations. Several recently described backward masking effects are not predicted by current theories of visual masking, including masking by four small dots that surround (but do not touch) a target object and masking by a surrounding object that remains on display after the target object has been turned off. A crucial factor in both of these effects is attention: almost no masking occurs if attention can be rapidly focused on the target, whereas powerful masking ensues if attention directed at the target is delayed. This is apparent in the increasingly widespread literature and journals that deal with the topic and is being facilitated by adoption of multi-agent simulation in research. Much of this research uses simple agents to explore limited aspects of social behaviour. Incorporation of higher order capabilities such as cognition into agents has proven problematic. Influenced by AI approaches, where cognitive capability has been sought, it has commonly been attempted based on a 'representational' theory of cognition. This has proven computationally expensive and difficult to implement. There would be some benefit also in the development of a framework for social simulation research which provides a consistent set of assumptions applicable in different fields and which can be scaled to apply to simple and more complex simulation tasks. This paper sets out, as a basis for discussion, a meta-model incorporating an 'enactive' model of cognition drawing on both complex system insights and the theory of autopoiesis. It is intended to provide an ontology that avoids some of the limitation of more traditional approaches and at the same time providing a basis for simulation in a wide range of fields and pursuant of a wider range of human behaviours.}, pages = {1-23}, url = {http://jasss.soc.surrey.ac.uk/3/2/1.html}, } @book{graf00:_tools_algor_const_analy_system_, title = {Tools and Algorithms for the These findings have led to the popular notion that the more choice, the better-that the human ability to manage, and the human desire for, choice is unlimited. Findings from 3 experimental studies starkly challenge this implicit assumption that having more choices is necessarily more intrinsically motivating than having fewer. These experiments, which were conducted in both field and laboratory settings, show that people are more likely to purchase gourmet jams or chocolates or to undertake optional class essay assignments when offered a limited array of 6 choices rather than a more extensive array of 24 or 30 choices. The short-term profit maximization objective of a firm may stand in contrast with what the community wants - a ``safe and clean environment''. This paper argues that the information regarding the environmental impact of a firm's products, processes, and waste may be asymmetrically distributed between the firm and the community. The resultant information asymmetry may influence the probability of a firm acting opportunistically, and ultimately, a firm's ethical behavior. The paper identifies information asymmetry between a firm and community, as well as that within the community. The perceived information asymmetry across various community segments may perhaps be a determinant of environmental discrimination. The paper further contends that information asymmetry may diminish in the long run. We develop a general mathematical theory of semantic space models and use this to motivate a set of new methods for high-dimensional space construction. We then develop a low-dimensional topographic map model of the lexicon from statistical considerations and apply both models to a range of semantic priming experiments. We show that both high and low-dimensional models capture a wide range of previously unmodelled semantic relations. We also model the effects of association, semantic relatedness and their interaction, and offer a new theory of associative relations. We then demonstrate that, contrary to previous findings, the models also replicate graded and mediated priming effects. Mediated priming is of theoretical importance to memory models because its existence has been taken as evidence for spreading activation and against compound cue models. This paper is concerned with a particular form of monitoring. A ``peripheral participant'' is defined as someone who has a legitimate interest in monitoring a joint task (being carried out by some ``primary participants'') but who is not actively involved in carrying out the task themselves. The concept is illustrated through field studies of telemedical consultation and related to other analyses of overhearing. Two experiments are reported where participatory status was manipulated using a role-play task. Ratings of interpersonal awareness, measures of gaze direction and recall of the conversation all indicate that the task successfully operationalized the distinction between primary and peripheral participation. In addition, the experiment manipulated the visibility of the peripheral participant to a remote primary participant. This was shown to have an effect on the remote primary participant's interpersonal awareness of the peripheral participant. Potential mechanisms for this effect are considered. It is concluded that peripheral participation is a potentially important form of involvement that needs to be considered when designing and configuring equipment for video-mediated cooperative work.}, Little is known, however, about how such dialog acts (DAs) can be automatically classified in truly natural conversation. This study asks whether current approaches, which use mainly word information, could be improved by adding prosodic information. The study is based on more than 1000 conversations from the Switchboard corpus. DAs were hand-annotated, and prosodic features (duration, pause, F0, energy, and speaking rate) were automatically extracted for each DA. In training, decision trees based on these features were inferred; trees were then applied to unseen test data to evaluate performance. Performance was evaluated for prosody models alone, and after combining the prosody models with word information - either from true words or from the output of an automatic speech recognizer. For an overall classification task, as well as three subtasks, prosody made significant contributions to classification. Feature-specific analyses further revealed that although canonical features (such as F0 for questions) were important, less obvious features could compensate if canonical features were removed. Finally, in each task, integrating the prosodic model with a DA-specific statistical language model improved performance over that of the language model alone, especially for the case of recognized words. Results suggest that DAs are redundantly marked in natural conversation, and that a variety of automatically extractable prosodic features could aid dialog processing in speech applications.}, arxivid = {cs/0006024}, issn = {0023-8309}, pages = {1-55}, pdf_locked = {False}, pmid = {10746366}, primaryclass = {cs}, doi = {10.1177/002383099804100410}, url = {http://arxiv.org/abs/cs/0006024}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Shriberg/Shriberg_2000_Can_Prosody_Aid_the_Automatic_Classifica.pdf}, } @book{skinner00_machiav_, title = {Machiavelli}, subtitle = {A Very Short Introduction}, author = {Skinner, Quentin}, year = {2000}, tags = {history, introduction, machiavelli, politics}, publisher = {Oxford University Press}, pdf_locked = {False}, series = {Very Short Introductions}, isbn = {0-19-285407-0}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Skinner/Skinner_2000_Machiavelli.pdf}, } @misc{sorell00_descar_, title = {Descartes}, subtitle = {A Very Short Introduction}, author = {Sorell, Tom}, year = {2000}, tags = {descartes, logic, metaphysics, philosophy, scepticism, scientific_method}, publisher = {Oxford University Press}, pdf_locked = {False}, series = {Very Short Introductions}, isbn = {978-0-19-285409-4}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Sorell/Sorell_2000_Descartes.pdf}, } @book{sowa00_knowl_repres_, title = {Knowledge Representation}, subtitle = {Logical, Philosophical, and Computational Foundations}, author = {Sowa, John F.}, year = {2000}, tags = {__important, agents, artificial_intelligence, computer_science, knowledge_representation, logic, ontology, philosophy}, publisher = {Brooks Cole}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {0-534-94965-7}, url = {http://www.jfsowa.com/krbook/index.htm}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Sowa/Sowa_2000_Knowledge_Representation.pdf}, } @report{stent00_annot_argum_acts_spoken_dialog_, title = {Annotating Argumentation Acts in Spoken Dialogue}, author = {Stent, A J and Allen, J F}, year = {2000}, tags = {__important, annotation, monroe, speech_act, task_orientation}, institution = {University of Rochester}, pdf_locked = {False}, url = {http://www.cs.rochester.edu/research/cisd/pubs/2000/stent-allen-tr740.pdf}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Stent/Stent_2000_Annotating_Argumentation_Acts_in_Spoken_.pdf}, } @judicial{steven00_santa_fe_doe_, title = {Santa Fe v Doe}, author = {Stevens, John Paul}, year = {2000}, tags = {education, judicial_opinion, judiciary, prayer_in_schools, religious_freedom, SCOTUS}, dissenting = {Rehnquist}, institution = {Supreme Court Of The United States}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {2000/2000/2000/Stevens/Stevens_2000_Santa_Fe_v_Doe.pdf}, } @inproceedings{suchman00_human_, title = {Human/machine reconsidered}, author = {Suchman, Lucy}, year = {2000}, tags = {agency, plan, situated_action}, booktitle = {Plans and Situated Actions: The problem of Human-machine Communication}, abstract = {Author's note: This paper is a work-in-progress under development as the Introduction to a 2 nd , revised edition of Plans and Situated Actions: the problem of human-machine communication. Cambridge University Press, originally published in 1987. With the 2 nd edition of Plans and Situated Actions my aim is to rejoin a discussion in which I first participated over ten years ago, on the question of nonhuman - particularly machine - agency. My renewed interest in questions of agency is inspired by recent developments both in the area of interactive computing and in the debate over human-nonhuman relations within social studies of science and technology. What I propose to do is another attempt at working these two projects together, in what I hope will be a new and useful way. The newness is less a radical shift in where we draw the boundary between persons and machines than a reconsideration of how, on what bases, those boundaries are drawn.
