In this work basic ontological categories for social action, structure, and mind are introduced. Sociality (social action, social structure) is let emerge from the action and intelligence of individual agents in a common world. Also some aspects of the way-down-how emergent collective phenomena shape the individual mind-are examined. First, interference and dependence are defined, and then different kinds of coordination (reactive versus anticipatory; unilateral versus bilateral; selfish versus collaborative) are characterised. “Weak social action”, based on beliefs about the mind of the other agents, and ”strong social action”, based on goals about others' minds and their actions, are distinguished. Special attention is paid to Goal Delegation and Goal Adoption that are considered as the basic ingredients of social commitment and contract, and then of exchange, cooperation, group action, and organisation. Different levels of delegation and then of autonomy of the delegated agent are described; and different levels of goal-adoption are shown to characterise true collaboration. Social goals in the minds of the group members are argued to be the real glue of joint activity, and the notion of social commitment, as different from individual and from collective commitment, is underlined. The necessity for modelling social objective structures and constraints is emphasised and the ”shared mind” view of groups and organisations is criticised. The spontaneous and unaware emergence of a dependence structure is explained, as well as its feedback on the participants' minds and behaviours. Critical observations are presented on current confusions such as that between ”social” and ”collective” action, or between communication and social action. The main claims of the paper are the following: (a) The real foundation of all sociality (cooperation, competition, groups, organisation, etc.) is the individual social action and mind. One cannot reduce or connect action at the collective level to action at the individual level unless one passes through the social character of the individual action, (b) Important levels of coordination and cooperation necessarily require minds and cognitive agents (beliefs, desires, intentions, etc.). (c) However, cognition, communication and agreement are not enough for modelling and implementing cooperation: emergent pre-cognitive structures and constraints should be formalised, and emergent forms of cooperation are needed also among planning and deliberative agents, (d) We are going towards a synthetic paradigm in AI and Cognitive Science, reconciling situatedness and plans, reactivity and mental representations, cognition, emergence and self-organisation.}, invalid_isbn = {0004-3702}, issn = {10450823}, pages = {157–182}, pdf_locked = {False}, doi = {10.1016/S0004-3702(98)00056-3}, file = {1900/1990/1998/Castelfranchi/Castelfranchi_1998_Modeling_Social_Actions_for_Ai_Agents.pdf}, file2 = {1900/1990/1998/Castelfranchi/Castelfranchi_1998_Modeling_Social_Actions_for_Ai_Agents_ab92b.pdf}, } @article{castelfranchi98_normat_reput_costs_compl_1_, title = {Normative Reputation and the Costs of Compliance}, author = {Castelfranchi, Cristiano and Conte, Rosaria and Paolucci, Mario}, year = {1998}, tags = {compliance, norms, reputation}, journal = {Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation, JASSS}, volume = {1}, number = {3}, abstract = {In this paper, the role of normative reputation in reducing the costs of complying with norms will be explored. In previous simulations (Conte & Castelfranchi 1995), in contrast to a traditional view of norms as means for increasing co-ordination among agents, the effects of normative and non-normative strategies in the control of aggression among agents in a common environment was confronted. Normative strategies were found to reduce aggression to a much greater extent than non-normative strategies, and also to afford the highest average strength and the lowest polarisation of strength among the agents. The present study explores the effects of the interaction between populations following different criteria for aggression control. In such a situation the normative agents alone bear the cost of norms, due to their less aggressive behaviour, while other agents benefit from their presence. Equity is then restored by raising the cost of aggression through the introduction of agents' reputation. This allows normative agents to avoid respecting the cheaters' private property, and to impose a price for transgression. The relevance of knowledge communication is then emphasised by allowing neighbour normative agents to communicate. In particular, the spreading of agents' reputation via communication allows normative agents to co-operate without deliberation at the expense of non-normative agents, thereby redistributing the costs of normative strategies. }, pages = {3}, pdf_locked = {False}, url = {http://jasss.soc.surrey.ac.uk/1/3/3.html}, file = {1900/1990/1998/Castelfranchi/Castelfranchi_1998_Normative_Reputation_and_the_Costs_of_Co.pdf}, } @inproceedings{castelfranchi98_princ_mas_, title = {Principles of trust for MAS}, subtitle = {Cognitive anatomy, social importance, and quantification}, author = {Castelfranchi, Cristiano and Falcone, Rino}, year = {1998}, tags = {cognitive, MAS, quantification, trust}, booktitle = {Proceedings International Conference on Multi Agent Systems (Cat. We explain why trust is a bet, and implies some risks, and analyse the most basic forms of non-social trust (reliance on objects and tools) to arrive at the more complex forms of social trust, based on morality and reputation. Finally we present a principled quantification of trust, based on its cognitive ingredients. And use this “degree of trust” as the basis for a rational decision to delegate or not to another agent. There are at least three reasons for developing such a theory. First, one of the most relevant notions of “agent” is based on the notion of ”task” and of ”on behalf of”. In order to found this notion a theory of delegation among agents is needed. Second, the notion of autonomy should be based on different kinds and levels of delegation. Third, the entire theory of cooperation and collaboration requires the definition of the two complementary attitudes of goal delegation and adoption linking collaborating agents. After motivating the necessity for a principled theory of delegation (and adoption) the paper presents a plan-based approach to this theory. We analyze several dimensions of the delegation/adoption (on the basis of the interaction between the agents, of the specification of the task, of the possibility to subdelegate, of the delegation of the control, of the help levels). The agent's autonomy and levels of agency are then deduced. We describe the modelling of the client from the contractor's point of view and vice versa, with their differences, and the notion of trust that directly derives from this modelling. Finally, a series of possible conflicts between client and contractor are considered: in particular collaborative conflicts, which stem from the contractor's intention to help the client beyond its request or delegation and to exploit its own knowledge and intelligence (reasoning, problem solving, planning, and decision skills) for the client itself.}, issn = {09218890}, month = {sep}, pages = {141–157}, pdf_locked = {False}, doi = {10.1016/S0921-8890(98)00028-1}, url = {http://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0921889098000281}, file = {1900/1990/1998/Castelfranchi/Castelfranchi_1998_Towards_a_Theory_of_Delegation_for_Agent.pdf}, } @inproceedings{chase98_vision_2_, title = {Visions of rationality.}, author = {Chase, V M and Hertwig, R and Gigerenzer, G}, year = {1998}, tags = {bounded_rationality, inference, logic, rationality}, booktitle = {Trends in cognitive sciences}, volume = {2}, number = {6}, abstract = {The classical view that equates rationality with adherence to the laws of probability theory and logic has driven much research on inference. Much theorizing about norms has focused on how they create social structure, standards of appropriateness, and stability in international politics. Recent empirical research on norms, in contrast, has examined their role in creating political change, but change processes have been less well-theorized. We induce from this research a variety of theoretical arguments and testable hypotheses about the role of norms in political change. We argue that norms evolve in a three-stage ”life cycle” of emergence, ”norm cascades,” and internalization, and that each stage is governed by different motives, mechanisms, and behavioral logics. This paper is a concise overview of what has been studied and how: the systems, independent, intervening, adaptation, and dependent variables, manipulated or measured, and experimental procedures employed. Part I categorizes the contextual and intervening factors. Part II analyzes 1,582 hypotheses resulting from pairings of independent and dependent variables. The results show that the modal outcome for group support systems (GSS) compared with face-to-face (FtF) methods is “no difference,” while the overall percentage of positive effects for hypotheses that compare GSS with FtF is a disappointing 16.6 percent. Experiments with seven to ten groups per treatment condition working on idea-generation tasks and using GSS technology show an improvement up to 29.0 percent. These results are moderated by technology, process structure, communication mode, group factors, task type, the number of experimental groups per treatment condition, and the type of dependent variable measured. The purpose of this paper is to aid the GSS researcher by presenting detailed results of what has been studied and found in previous experiments, along with a discussion of what needs to be studied. The purpose of this paper is therefore to establish how the BDI model stands in relation to other contemporary models of agency, and where it should go next.}, arxivid = {9780201398298}, issn = {0302-9743}, pages = {1–10}, pdf_locked = {False}, pmid = {4520227}, isbn = {978-3-540-65713-2}, doi = {10.1007/3-540-49057-4_1}, url = {http://www.springerlink.com/index/dr028l3v7194328l.pdf}, file = {1900/1990/1998/Georgeff/Georgeff_1998_The_Belief_Desire_Intention_Model_of_Age.pdf}, } @book{ghosh98_fables_folk_tales_arunac_prades_, title = {Fables and Folk-Tales of Arunachal Pradesh}, author = {Ghosh, G.K. and Ghosh, Shukla}, year = {1998}, tags = {__important, arunachal_pradesh, capitalism, fables, folklore, india}, publisher = {Firma KLM Private Limited}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {1900/1990/1998/Ghosh/Ghosh_1998_Fables_and_Folk_Tales_of_Arunachal_Prade.pdf}, } @misc{giarratiano98_exper_system_, title = {Expert Systems}, subtitle = {Principles and Programming}, author = {Giarratiano, Joseph and Riley, Gary}, year = {1998}, tags = {CLIPS, expert_system, knowledge_representation, pattern_matching, production_rules, production_systems, software_engineering}, edition = {3}, publisher = {PWS}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {978-0-534-95053-8}, file = {1900/1990/1998/Giarratiano/Giarratiano_1998_Expert_Systems.pdf}, } @inproceedings{giunchiglia98__action_languag_based_causal_explan_, title = {An Action Language Based on Causal Explanation}, subtitle = {Preliminary Report}, author = {Giunchiglia, Enrico and Lifschitz, Vladimir}, year = {1998}, tags = {action_language, causal_logic, ccalc, fluents, inertia}, booktitle = {Artificial Intelligence/Innovative applications of Artificial Intelligence}, pdf_locked = {False}, url = {https://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/vl/papers/c.ps}, url2 = {https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.5555/295240.295752}, file = {1900/1990/1998/Giunchiglia/Giunchiglia_1998_An_Action_Language_Based_on_Causal_Expla.pdf}, } @book{gizzi98_house_jack_built_, title = {The House that Jack Built}, subtitle = {The Collected Lectures of Jack Spicer}, author = {Gizzi, Peter and Spicer, Jack}, year = {1998}, tags = {dictation, poetry, politics, prosody, verse}, publisher = {Wesleyan University Press}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {1900/1990/1998/Gizzi/Gizzi_1998_The_House_that_Jack_Built.pdf}, } @inproceedings{gray98_damag_merch_13_, title = {Damaged Merchandise? In the amusement industry, convincing sensory illusions and natural interactivity can translate directly into fascination for players and profit for owners. As with most technology-enabled opportunities today, the focus is often on the details: 70mm, simulation, full motion, HDTV, networking, cyberspace, virtual reality and so on. But these are (conceptually) “adjectives.” What will the ”nouns” be? What will players do with the technology? Where is the true value? Are these entertainments useful for something besides improving hand-eye coordination and encouraging aggressive behavior? LBEs are pure human interfaces. Here, at the beginning of an era of awesomely capable technologies, there is a remarkable opportunity to create new frameworks, scenarios, situations and mythologies. Most schools have taught that collaboration is the equivalent of cheating; but now it is becoming obvious that, although some individuals may win by themselves, more certain wins for more people are likely through collaboration. LBEs can be networked simulations; thus they can help people learn cooperation through play. LBEs can be groupware, and may be uniquely supportive of collaboration.}, issn = {00978930}, pages = {249–258}, pdf_locked = {False}, doi = {10.1145/178951.178953}, url = {http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?doid=178951.178953}, file = {1900/1990/1998/Harris/Harris_1998_Entertainment_driven_collaboration.pdf}, } @article{hegselmann98_under_compl_social_dynam_1_, title = {Understanding Complex Social Dynamics}, subtitle = {A Plea for Cellular Automata Based Modelling}, author = {Hegselmann, Rainer and Flache, Andreas}, year = {1998}, tags = {cellular_automata, dynamics, modeling, social}, journal = {Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation, JASSS}, volume = {1}, number = {3}, abstract = {The article argues that using cellular automata (CA) is a promising modelling approach to understand social dynamics. We propose a setup for multiple users with see-through head-mounted displays, allowing dedicated stereoscopic views and individualized interaction for each participant. Thishardware arrangement does not hinder social communication, which is essential for playing games. To maintain a high quality game experience we use facesnapping for fast and precise direct object manipulation. We derive semantic actions from snap events to pre-defined regions in the virtual gaming space. Combined with the game regions, we introduce a layering concept allowing individual views onto the common data structure. This combination creates a powerful automatic privacy mechanism, which makes security management dispensable at runtime.
