While traditional theorizing has tended to the focus on extreme expressions of nationalism, the author turns his attention to the everyday, less visible forms which are neither exotic or remote, he describes as `banal nationalism'. The author asks why people do not forget their national identity. He suggests that in daily life nationalism is constantly flagged in the media through routine symbols and habits of language. Banal Nationalism is critical of orthodox theories in sociology, politics and social psychology for ignoring this core feature of national identity. However, as is shown through a close analysis of various identity measures, this subjective experiential aspect is typically neglected in identity research, including the many studies that were guided by the identity status paradigm. A new approach is then presented, aimed at recapturing the subjective meaning of identity, by viewing identity as a modality of the self as subject and as characterized by specific experiences of agency, unity, otherness, and individuality. In an effort to empirically ground this approach, a typology of identity experience, derived from Loevinger's ego development stages, is described. Several studies are then reviewed, that confirm the viability of this typology and illustrate the advantages of studying identity from the perspective of the self as subject.}, issn = {02732297}, locked = {true}, pages = {404-433}, pdf_locked = {True}, doi = {10.1006/drev.1995.1017}, url = {http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0273229785710179}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Blasi/Blasi_1995_The_Development_of_Identity_A_Critical_.pdf}, } @article{blostein95_pract_use_graph_rewrit_, title = {Practical Use of Graph Rewriting}, author = {Blostein, Dorothea and Fahmy, Hoda and Grbavec, Ann}, year = {1995}, tags = {attributes, dissertation, graph, graph_rewriting, labels}, journal = {Engineering}, number = {95}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Blostein/Blostein_1995_Practical_Use_of_Graph_Rewriting.pdf}, } @book{brand95_how_build_learn_, title = {How Buildings Learn}, subtitle = {What Happen After They're Built}, author = {Brand, Stewart}, year = {1995}, tags = {architecture, design, urban_design}, publisher = {Penguin}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {978-1-101-56264-2}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Brand/Brand_1995_How_Buildings_Learn.pdf}, } @inproceedings{brazier95_formal_specif_multi_agent_system_, title = {Formal Specification of Multi-Agent Systems}, subtitle = {A Real-World Case}, author = {Brazier, Frances and Dunin, Barbara and Jennings, Nick R and Treur, Jan}, year = {1995}, tags = {agents, DESIRE, formal, framework, MAS, multi_agent_systems, specification}, booktitle = {Proc. of the First International Conference on Multi-Agent Systems, ICMAS-95}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Brazier/Brazier_1995_Formal_Specification_of_Multi_Agent_Syst.pdf}, } @book{bulgakov95_master_margar_, title = {The Master and Margarita}, author = {Bulgakov, Mikhail}, year = {1995}, tags = {comedy, faust, fiction, russia, satire}, publisher = {Random House}, pdf_locked = {False}, translator = {Burgin, Diana and O'Connnor, Katherine Tiernan}, isbn = {0-679-76080-6}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Bulgakov/Bulgakov_1995_The_Master_and_Margarita.pdf}, } @book{chambers95__codex_tyran_, title = {Codex Tyranids}, author = {Chambers, Andy}, year = {1995}, tags = {40k, codex, rule_book}, edition = {2}, publisher = {Games Workshop}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {1-872372-90-2}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Chambers/Tyranids (2ed).pdf}, file2 = {1900/1990/1995/Chambers/40K 2e - In recent interpretive consumer research, three research streams have emerged, each portraying how people consume through a distinctive metaphor: consuming as experience, consuming as integration, and consuming as classification. The research reported here-a two-year observational case study of baseball spectators in Chicago's Wrigley Field bleachers-builds on this literature to systematically detail the universe of actions that constitute consuming. The resulting typology refines, extends, and synthesizes the three existing approaches to consuming and adds a fourth dimension-consuming as play-to yield a comprehensive vocabulary for describing how consumers consume. Eventually, guided by people like Dijkstra and Hoare, we learned that pictures were a bad way to describe programs because they collapsed under the weight of complexity, producing an incomprehensible spaghetti of boxes and arrows. In the great tradition of learning from our mistakes how to make the same mistake again, many people decided that drawing pictures was a wonderful way to specify systems. So, they devised graphical specification languages. Not wanting to be outdone, I wrote this paper to show that you can write TLA specifications by drawing pictures. It describes how to interpret as TLA formulas the typical circles and arrows with which people describe state transitions. These diagrams represent safety properties. I could also have added some baroque conventions for adding liveness properties to the pictures, but there's a limit to how silly I will get. When I wrote the paper, I actually did think that pictures might be useful for explaining parts of specifications. But I have yet to encounter any real example where they would have helped. This paper contains, to my knowledge, the only incorrect ``theorem'' I have ever published. It illustrates that I can be as lazy as anyone in not bothering to check ``obvious'' assertions. I didn't published a correction because the theorem, which requires an additional hypothesis, was essentially a footnote and didn't affect the main point of the paper. The authors introduce the concept of the hypothesis objects, and augment the production rule format by adding the hypothesis condition elements in the LHS part of a rule, which control the forward and backward chaining invocation of rules. To be applied to the backward chaining, a modified version of the Rete network has been formulated by adding the hypothesis-and-nodes and backward direction edges to the node network generated by the Rete algorithm. The authors then develop a backward chaining algorithm which takes advantage of already existing partial match results obtained by the previous forward chaining. Large Knowledge Bases: Knowledge Building & Knowledge Sharing}, abstract = {Normal human subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while performing a simple visual manual reaction-time (RT) task with lateralized brief stimuli, the so-called Poffenberger's paradigm. This paradigm was employed to measure interhemispheric transmission (IT) time by subtracting mean RT for the uncrossed hemifield-hand conditions, that is, those conditions not requiring an IT, from the crossed hemifield-hand conditions, that is, those conditions requiring an IT to relay visual information from the hemisphere of entry to the hemisphere subserving the response. The obtained difference is widely believed to reflect callosal conduction time, but so far there is no direct physiological evidence in humans. The aim of our experiment was twofold: first, to test the hypothesis that IT of visuomotor information requires the corpus callosum and to identify the cortical areas specifically activated during IT. Second, we sought to discover whether IT occurs mainly at premotor or perceptual stages of information processing. We found significant activations in a number of frontal, parietal, and temporal cortical areas and in the genu of the corpus callosum. These activations were present only in the crossed conditions and therefore were specifically related to IT. No selective activation was present in the uncrossed conditions. The location of the activated callosal and cortical areas suggests that IT occurs mainly, but not exclusively, at premotor level. This is because the control of rule firings has been buried in the production rules themselves. To cope with this problem, we propose a meta-level control architecture for production systems, where procedural programming languages, such as Lisp and C, are employed to explicitly describe the control plans of production systems. The key idea of the architecture is to view production systems as a collection of independent rule processes, each of which monitors the global database and performs actions when its conditions are satisfied by the database. Procedural Control Macros (PCMs), which are based on Hoare's CSP, are then introduced into procedural programming languages to establish communication with the collection of rule processes. Although the PCMs are simple and easy to implement, the readability and maintainability of production system applications are greatly enhanced. Together with the original facilities of procedural languages, the PCMs enable users to efficiently specify the control plans for production systems. Furthermore, since control information is gathered into control plans, production rules can be declarative and thereby application-independent. This new feature makes it possible to develop large-scale shared rule bases. Experiments of redescribing 370 rules have been performed based on the proposed meta-level control architecture. The results demonstrate significant improvements in the readability and maintainability of those rules without any significant representation (file volumes) and runtime (processing time) overheads.}, issn = {10414347}, pages = {44-52}, pdf_locked = {False}, doi = {10.1109/69.368519}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Nakata/Nakata_1995_A_Meta_Level_Control_Architecture_for_Pr.pdf}, } @article{nebel95_plan_reuse_versus_plan_gener_76_, title = {Plan Reuse Versus Plan Generation}, subtitle = {A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis}, author = {Nebel, Bernhard and Koehler, Jana}, year = {1995}, tags = {plan_reuse, planning}, journal = {Artificial Intelligence}, volume = {76}, number = {1-2}, pages = {427-454}, pdf_locked = {False}, doi = {10.1016/0004-3702(94)00082-c}, url = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0004-3702(94)00082-C}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Nebel/Nebel_1995_Plan_Reuse_Versus_Plan_Generation_a_The.pdf}, } @manual{nintendo95_earth_player_guide_, title = {Earthbound Player's Guide}, author = {Nintendo}, year = {1995}, tags = {design, game, JRPG, RPG}, howpublished = {Online}, pdf_locked = {False}, url = {https://www.nintendo.co.jp/clvs/manuals/common/pdf/CLV-P-SAAJE.pdf}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Nintendo/Nintendo_1995_Earthbound_Player_s_Guide.pdf}, } @article{oatley95_taxon_emotion_liter_respon_theor_23_, title = {A Taxonomy of the Emotions of Literary Response and a Theory of Identification in Fictional Narrative}, author = {Oatley, Keith}, year = {1995}, tags = {emotion, narrative, taxonomy}, journal = {Poetics}, volume = {23}, number = {1-2}, publisher = {Elsevier}, pages = {53-74}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Oatley/Oatley_1995_A_Taxonomy_of_the_Emotions_of_Literary_R.pdf}, } @inproceedings{pearl95_probab_, title = {Probabilistic evaluation of sequential plans from causal models with hidden variables}, author = {Pearl, Judea and Robins, James}, year = {1995}, tags = {causal_diagrams, causal_model, graphical_models, probability, sequential_planning}, booktitle = {Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence}, pdf_locked = {False}, url = {https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.5555/2074158.2074209}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Pearl/Pearl_1995_Probabilistic_evaluation_of_sequential_p.pdf}, } @misc{pirolli95_infor_forag_infor_acces_envir_, title = {Information Foraging in Information Access Environments}, author = {Pirolli, Peter and Card, Stuart K.}, year = {1995}, tags = {foraging, HCI, information_foraging, user_interface}, pdf_locked = {False}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Pirolli/Pirolli_1995_Information_Foraging_in_Information_Acce.pdf}, } @book{pratchett95_masker_, title = {Maskerade}, author = {Pratchett, Terry}, year = {1995}, tags = {discworld, fantasy, opera}, publisher = {Victor Gollancz}, isbn = {0-575-05808-0}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Pratchett/Pratchett_1995_Maskerade.epub}, } @book{priestley95__codex_imper_guard_, title = {Codex Imperial Guard}, author = {Priestley, Rick and Chambers, Andy and Johnson, Jervis and Pickstock, Ian}, year = {1995}, tags = {40k, codex, rule_book, table_top_game}, edition = {2}, publisher = {Games Workshop}, pdf_locked = {False}, series = {Warhammer 40,0000}, isbn = {1-872372-92-9}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Priestley/Codex - Imperial Guard (2ed).pdf}, } @book{priestley95__codex_ultram_, title = {Codex Ultramarines}, author = {Priestley, Rick and Johnson, Jervis and Merrett, Alan}, year = {1995}, tags = {40k, codex, rule_book}, edition = {2}, publisher = {Games Workshop}, pdf_locked = {False}, isbn = {1-872372-87-2}, file = {1900/1990/1995/Priestley/Ultramarines (2ed).pdf}, file2 = {1900/1990/1995/Priestley/40K 2e - Codex - Ultramarines.pdf}, } @inproceedings{rao95__bdi_agent_95_, title = {BDI Agents: From Theory to Practice}, subtitle = {From Theory to Practice}, author = {Rao, Anand S. and Georgeff, Michael P.}, year = {1995}, tags = {air_traffic_management, artificial_intelligence, BDI, belief, desire, intention, large_scale}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the First International Conference on Multiagent Systems, June 12-14, 1995, San Francisco, California, USA}, volume = {95}, abstract = {The study of computational agents capable of rational behaviour has received a great deal of attention in recent years.
